New research of almost 1000 global gamers by Elympics has revealed how the adoption of Web3 gaming is being driven by social platforms such as Telegram and incentivised by compete-to-earn games. The results of the research along with a global report: “The Future of Web3 Gaming is Competitive”, commissioned by the leading Web3 gaming protocol, were unveiled during the DoubleXP Gaming Night event at Token 2049 in Singapore, in collaboration with the Blockchain Game Alliance (BGA) and Web3 gaming platform PlayToEarn.
According to the survey, 79% of respondents play games daily, with over half (54%) choosing to play via social platforms like Telegram and 16% opting for mobile apps such as FC Mobile or Brawl Stars. Among those who have never played a Web3 game, 11% cited the complexity of crypto as a barrier. These insights suggest that the seamless onboarding and accessibility of mobile and social gaming are crucial factors driving Web3 gaming adoption.
Interestingly, 42% of respondents cited the opportunity to earn or make money as their primary motivation for playing. When asked about their favorite games and what made them enjoyable, 65% pointed to compete-to-earn mechanics, while 14% were drawn in by a sense of community.
Players are also showing a strong willingness to invest in their Web2 and Web3 gaming activities, with half (50%) having paid for subscriptions or gameplay, 31% investing in NFTs, and 29% purchasing in-game assets within free-to-play games. For those who haven’t yet engaged with Web3 gaming, the primary obstacles were the perceived complexity of crypto wallets and dissatisfaction with the quality of available games.
Tom Kopera, COO of Elympics, speaking a the DoubleXP Gaming Night said of the results:
“We’ve seen a transformational shift in the gaming industry, powered by blockchain technology in recent years. However, while technology has developed it has failed in one critical element – Web3 games onboarding has been too complex for many of the most avid gamers. Our research shows that with the entry of social platforms such as Telegram into the Web3 world and the growth of skill games with money competitions that are community-driven, we are seeing the start of mass adoption by players around the world. Gamers enjoy winning through competition and so we build games that meet this need. We believe blockchain gaming will create a more competitive and rewarding ecosystem, transforming mobile gaming from mere entertainment into a dynamic part of our digital lives.”
