New PvE Roguelike Mode Arrives in Axie Origins—Can You Beat the Odds?

Axie Origins has launched its first-ever PvE Roguelike Mode. This new feature brings a fresh, challenging twist to the game, replacing the previous Adventure Mode for a limited time. The Roguelike Mode is part of the broader updates rolled out during the preseason for S10.

What’s New in Roguelike Mode?

Unlike Adventure Mode, where players progress through stages by battling hordes of Chimeras, Roguelike brings more unpredictable and high-stakes gameplay. Each run in Roguelike Mode is unique, meaning that no two playthroughs are the same. Players must clear through a series of stages, each filled with challenges and powerful enemies. But the biggest change here is the introduction of permadeath—if you lose in just one stage, your run ends, and you must start over from the beginning.

This feature is set to test even the most seasoned Axie players. Unlike Adventure Mode, where players could rely on a more forgiving progression system, Roguelike demands careful management of your Axie team. Your Axies’ health does not reset between stages. Fallen Axies remain out of action unless revived.

After winning a stage, you can choose 1 of 3 random buffs for one Axie. You will be given 5 minutes to choose. Some buffs last a few stages, while others last for the entire run. Make sure to look for buffs that offer healing effects (eg: heal after each round of attack) before going for those that apply debuffs.

There are a few unique combat mechanics in Roguelike Mode. These include:

  1. Class Advantage: Like the Classic mode, your Axies deal +20% damage to enemy classes they are strong against and suffer -20% damage to those they are weak against.
  2. Class Bonus: Attacks that match the Axie’s class receive a +15% damage boost.
  3. Crit: There’s a 5% chance that your attacks will deal double damage, adding a streak of unpredictability.
  4. Chimera’s Corruption: This effect reduces the stats of all Heal cards in your deck by 30% at the start of the battle, making it harder to recover health.
  5. Chimera’s Instinct: Chimeras in this mode heal 30 HP whenever they receive a Sleep status. Potato Leaf card players may want to pay attention.

Limited-Time Playtest

The Roguelike Mode is now live for testing until August 28th, giving players a chance to explore this new play style. Sky Mavis has launched this mode as part of a preseason update for Season 10, with plans to pause the feature later to incorporate user feedback. The dev team is keen to gather insights from the players to further improve this PvE game.

Rewards and Exclusive Events

To encourage participation, Sky Mavis has launched exclusive rewards and events tied to the Roguelike Mode. Winning matches in this game will grant you AXP, Honor Medals, and Roguelike Tickets. These tickets are especially valuable as they can be redeemed for exclusive, non-seasonal Runes and Charms.

What’s more, there are 3 exciting events linked to this mode:

Roguelike Race: This event is a call to all speed runners and streamers. Players are challenged to complete a full run in the shortest time possible while streaming their gameplay live. The first five players to achieve this feat will win collectible Axies, including rare Origin, Meo, Xmas, Shiny, and Japanese Axies. The deadline for submissions is August 21st. So, make sure to act fast if you want to secure these coveted prizes.

Roguelike Gem Bonanza: Running from August 7th to August 28th, this event offers a total prize pool of 700,000 Origins Gems. The top 1,000 players who beat all three levels of Roguelike Mode will share this prize pool, with the first 100 players earning 1,500 Gems each. This event is open to all, making it a highly competitive event.

Roguelike Survey: Those who complete Level 2 of Roguelike Mode and fill out a feedback survey between August 14th and 29th will receive 500 Origins Gems.

Other Updates in Preseason S10

Besides the Roguelike Mode, Axie Origins has released several updates. One of them is a new feature called Meta Morph, which allows collectible Axies to change their cards. This new mechanic adds more utility to collectible Axies, allowing players to test different builds.

Also, the Offseason Collectible Leaderboard returns with an increased prize pool of 6,000 AXS. This allows players to climb to the top with their collectible Axies. The preseason also sees the launch of era-based testing for Runes and Charms, as well as the S9.5 Rare Kit, now available for free in the Origins Shop. Players can also unlock two new Starter Axies, Hope and Shillin, for 1,000 gems each.
