The team says that the in-game currency may be wiped at some point in the future. But they do promise to provide players with a warning before that happens, giving everyone a chance to spend their hard-earned currency. On the other hand, any gear that players accumulate during this early access playtest will remain through the game launch. That means that starting right now, you can begin gathering cool items and upgrades for the game without having to worry about ever losing them!

Additionally, players who join the Pro subscriber program (cost $11.99 USD per month, payable with in-game GNU tokens or through XSolla), have the opportunity to sell their items on the player to player marketplace. OTG Pro membership also opens up extra rewards on the battle pass, boosts your earnings from matches, and will also allow entry into restricted tournaments.

What is Off the Grid?

Set in a future world, Off the Grid is a deadly, competitive game show where contestants sacrifice their natural limbs in order to equip enhanced prosthetics and compete in the game arena for untold wealth.

Wealth in the Off the Grid comes in the form of an in-game currency called Guns, and a wide selection of weapons, equipment, and cosmetic items. Earn experience by playing and use it to claim rewards through a progression and battle pass type system. Find special Hex boxes in-game and extract them for even more rewards!

Off The Grid is a third person shooter. The only available game mode at the moment is a team-based battle royale fight. Players compete in ten teams of three, fighting to be the last ones left while also hopefully gathering some permanent loot. Everyone airdrops into the city, which features several different zones and a variety of terrain to navigate. With zip lines that haul players up quickly as well as jetpacks for extra maneuverability, the game often goes vertical.

Players begin the game with basic equipment. But loot chests scattered throughout the map hold various weapons, ammos, and bionic implants which can be gathered and equipped, though only for that match.

You can also designate a specific loadout of items that you own, including bionic arms and legs. You won’t start the match with these items. But if you grab enough cash from the resources boxes on the map, you can have your specified loadout airdropped to you.

Loadouts allow quite a bit of customization, even down to specific parts on the weapons. But, you’ll have to find or purchase these items and enhancements before you can add them to your loadouts.

Players do automatically respawn for the first part of a match. And wounded players can be revived by teammates. But, as the match progresses, automatic respawns end, and players can only be brought back if their teammate visits and uses a special spawn station. If everyone on your team is dead at the same time, then your entire team is eliminated from the match.

Some loot chests hold Hexes. Hexes are the true loot of the game. Bring a Hex box to a Hex extractor to have it placed into your account’s inventory. Inside of these Boxes are various items. But unlike the stuff you find during a match, these items go into your permanent inventory. Hex Extractors have a delay timer, giving other players a chance to interrupt the transfer and even steal the Hex Box for themselves!

This item extraction gameplay adds an extra level of tactical decision making, as the game map shrinks pretty quickly, pushing the players closer together. When the match is complete, you can open any Hexes you managed to extract and add the items inside to a new or existing loadout.

Thoughts on Off the Grid gameplay

For an early access build, Off the Grid has very smooth gameplay. Especially considering the size and complexity of the map, as well as hosting 30 players at a time.

The game has a pretty steep learning curve. It doesn’t take a whole lot of shots to bring players down, so there isn’t a huge margin for mistakes. As a new player, it took me several matches to even begin to get my bearings. And though players who are already comfortable with this style of shooter will likely settle in more quickly, there is plenty of additional complexity to consider with the vertical movement, bionic upgrades, airdropped loadouts, and extracting Hexes.

But overall the game is quite a bit of fun. And, of course, if you can get a team of friends who can communicate and work together, the experience will be even better.

All in all, I give Off the Grid a thumbs up and recommend it as a game worth checking out!
