Web3 PvP turn-based RPG Champions Tactics is now live in Technical Beta, or open beta, from September 18th, 3 PM UTC, until September 23rd, 6 AM UTC. Here’s how you can participate and what you could get from doing so.
How to Play Champions Tactics Technical Beta
Playing in this short tech beta season requires owning at least one Champion NFT. These are the character figurines that you use to battle against other players. Around 1450 Champion NFTs can be found listed on the official game marketplace at the time of writing, with the cheapest listing currently going for around 260 wrapped $OAS (~$9.70). You will need to sign in to your Ubisoft Connect account and then connect your wallet, with WalletConnect, Brave Wallet, MetaMask, and Ronin Wallet all supported. If you choose a social login or email option instead of connecting your existing wallet, then the system will automatically generate an Oasys HOME Verse wallet for you that you can choose to associate with your profile. You can only have one wallet associated with your account, so you’ll want to decide whether to stick with an internal or external wallet before purchasing assets to avoid future issues. Next to automatically generating wallets using a system powered by Sequence, the experience is further designed to be accessible to a wider web2 audience by letting users make purchases using a debit/credit card.
It’s important to note that the skill and stats data found on the marketplace does not reflect the actual in-game stats. You will have to use this balancing document to find the latest info that applies to the current version of the game. The warning on the marketplace page also contains a link to the same document. Everything is still subject to change in an effort to create a balanced PvP blockchain gaming experience.
Due to a complicated launch issue, you’ll have to download the game on PC using a link found in the announcement channel of the game’s official Discord server. This will let you log in to your Ubisoft Connect account in order to start downloading the blockchain title. (Update: you can now download the game normally from it’s official website).
Once you’re ready to go, you can start playing tactical PvP matches against other players with your Champion NFTs. Set up a team of 3 Champions from your collection in a draft phase where both you and the opponent go one by one in picking your team members, helping you potentially decide which Champion to pick next. After doing so, you can begin your strategic battle in which both players simultaneously pick the skill they’d like each Champion to use before ending their turn. Aside from the draft phase, it’s basically quite similar to Axie Infinity Classic, with this web3 game also making it important to try and figure out the order in which the opponent will use his champion’s skills. Win matches to rack up your score for which you can see a summary of only during the duration of the season. Complete daily quests that reset every day at 8 AM UTC, and activate a VIP system to test out its in-game bonuses.
Are There Any Rewards in Champions Tactics Open Beta?
While there are no play to earn or play to airdrop rewards, Champion NFT holders who do participate in this beta will have the masteries of their Champions saved, while getting rewarded with an exclusive emote, title, and in-game profile picture. Gold earned during this testing period will not be saved.
About Champions Tactics
Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles is a blockchain-powered turn-based RPG focused on competitive PvP gameplay. In development by Ubisoft for PC using the Oasys blockchain, or more specifically the layer 2 network and gaming platform, Oasys HOME Verse, the strategic Axie-like battler takes place in the dark fantasy world of Grimoria, where nobles and lords play a magical chess game using playable figurines referred to as Champions. That’s the game you get to play against other players, forming a team of 3 Champions to engage in intense multiplayer matches for an esports-like blockchain gaming experience.
Ubisoft initially announced Champions Tactics as their first web3 title in spring 2023, and have since held one closed beta and 2 NFT mints. A total of 75k Champions have been minted to date, and based on the official FAQ, that seems to be the total max supply limit.
Champions Tactics is scheduled to officially launch as a free to play title worldwide this fall 2024, according to the roadmap on the game’s official website. You can check out alpha gameplay in the video below, or see this more recent footage embedded in an X post. If you’re at TOKEN2049, you can visit Ubisoft’s booth with the Blockchain Game Alliance at BGA Booth M6, Level 5.
