By all reports, last weekend’s (Aug 10th) invite-only, Off the Grid playtest on the PS5 ecosystem was a resounding success. The participants from this playtest are under an NDA, so they haven’t revealed a ton of details, but we’ve seen some commentary, and it all seems to be very positive. The excitement around this battle-royale game is palpable.
In fact, even before the playtest started, some eager players went out and bought a new PS5 just so they could participate! The fervor among the playerbase for Off the Grid is definitely running high!
As far as I know, this is the first ever web3 game to release on a console. Which is huge! This integration not only brings web3 gaming to consoles, but it also potentially brings millions of new gamers to web3!
And apparently Gunzilla isn’t stopping with the PS5. They also have plans to release Off the Grid on Xbox, as well as PCs!
While the playtest was limited in scope, it served as a crucial step in fine-tuning the game’s mechanics ahead of its official release sometime this year (2024). Gunzilla Games is continuing to gather feedback from participants to ensure a polished final product for the full launch.
Keep an eye on Gunzilla’s official channels for more updates on future playtests and the game’s release timeline. If you’re interested in joining future playtests, sign up for the Off the Grid Pioneers Program.
What is Off the Grid?
Off The Grid is an upcoming futuristic battle royale game developed by Gunzilla Games, featuring a unique blend of traditional multiplayer gameplay with an ongoing narrative. The game is directed by filmmaker Neill Blomkamp, known for his work on movies like District 9, and brings his expertise in dystopian sci-fi to the world of gaming.
Set to launch in 2024, Off The Grid takes place in a cyberpunk world, allowing players to engage in fast-paced 150-player battles. What sets the game apart is its combination of battle royale mechanics with a 60-hour immersive narrative campaign. Players can choose between traditional PvP combat or completing missions within the PvE aspect of the game, all of which contribute to progressing the storyline
The gameplay focuses on futuristic warfare, advanced technology, and high mobility, with features like jetpacks and other cyberpunk-themed gadgets. Players can customize their characters, engage in missions, and influence the game world through their actions. Off the Grid stands out due to its emphasis on a deeper, story-rich experience within the typically fast-paced and competitive environment of battle royale games.
Though Off the Grid isn’t billing themselves as an ‘NFT game’, they will have support for NFTs in-game.
What is the GUNZ Protocol?
Off the Grid uses the GUNZ Protocol, a blockchain-based platform designed to create a decentralized ecosystem for the gaming industry.
GUNZ Protocol will have a Node system to run their chain. There doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of official documentation on the Node system yet, but CryptoStache has summed up the publicly available info in this video. You can also learn more on the GUNZ website.
